How to Organize Shelves 1

Versatile interior design to take you from day-to-day to the holidays

This is the time of year when you open your home to family and friends to celebrate the season and share love, laughter, family and fun.  Is your home ready to host more than your usual day-to-day family activities?

5 Ways to Make Your Home Cozy for Winter 1

Do you have to move furniture out of the dining room to expand the table for everyone to sit comfortably during holiday dinners? Do you rearrange your entire living room just to put up the Christmas tree? Do you find yourself shelving your favorite tabletop items to display your family’s favorite holiday traditions?  Do you cringe at the thought of hosting family and friends over the holidays because your house feels too small?

If your home is like most, it includes rows of keys flung onto a rack by the door, a pile of shoes inside the entryway, and several random bags, hats and jackets hanging on far too few hooks. Often, the living room fills up with items like mismatched end tables, a coffee table from your maternal grandmother when she passed away, and more toys than there is seating. Dining room tables can look more like office desks layered with stacks of papers, books, things to file, and to-do list piling up. Many good memories, good thoughts and good intentions can add up to a random, cluttered (and possibly stressful) home.

Finding a harmonious balance between the room and its furnishings and accessories defines a space and creates the room’s personality. When designing a room, I always run through this check list:

  • Comfort and warmth
  • Harmony of color
  • Scale and balance
  • Various textures and finishes
  • Primary and secondary functions
  • Areas of interesting details
  • Adequate storage
  • Attractive and comfortable furnishings

Built-in shelving, cabinets and storage cubbies are a great way to maximize space and efficiently organize your home. It may be too late to change your interior design for this holiday season, but it is a great time to start planning for next season. Take a look around this holiday season and determine what needs “fixing” about your layout or design, or where you might be able to build in some extra storage. If your home has good interior design, entertaining will be easy, regardless of the layout and size of the rooms.
